PA CITIZENS ADVISED
TO RE-REGISTER FOR "DO NOT CALL" LIST
Harrisburg,
August 24, 2007
-- If you were
among the first 2 million Pennsylvanians to register your phone line on
the state's "Do Not Call" list in 2002, you must re-register by
September 15 if you want to keep your number on the list, Senator
Michael A. O'Pake (D-Berks) advised constituents today.
Registration on the "Do
Not Call" list is only valid for five years, O'Pake explained.
"The only way to keep
from being barraged by unwanted and intrusive telemarketing calls is to
re-register for the 'Do Not Call' list and people who first signed up
five years ago should re-register right away," O'Pake said.
O'Pake said he's included
a link on his website (www.senator-opake.com)
to make it "quick and easy" for his constituents to "re-register
online." Consumers may also call the state Attorney General's toll-free
hotline at 1-888-777-3406 to re-register, visit the Attorney General's
website at
www.attorneygeneral.gov, or mail your name, complete mailing
address, telephone number and signature to Office of Attorney General,
Bureau of Consumer Protection, Do Not Call List, Strawberry Square, 15th
Floor, Harrisburg, PA 17120.
O'Pake noted that "it
doesn't matter if you can't remember when your first registered.
Re-registration at any time will keep you on the list for five more
years." But, he warned, those who first registered in the summer and
fall of 2002 will drop off the list Nov. 1 if they don't re-register by
September 15.
Registering on the "Do
Not Call" list stops most telemarketing solicitations with exceptions
such as: calls made by businesses to existing customers, calls from
tax-exempt organizations and calls made on behalf of political groups or
candidates. Senator O'Pake, however, is the prime sponsor of
legislation (SB 70) that -- if enacted -- would prohibit "political
robocalls" to households who don't want to receive them.
