Celebrating Pennsylvania's Over 100-Year-Old Treasure

As a member of the Pennsylvania Capitol Preservation Committee, it was my honor in 2006 to participate in the planning and celebration of the 100th anniversary of Pennsylvania's magnificent state Capitol building.  Pennsylvania's Capitol, without question, is one of the most beautiful state Capitol buildings anywhere in America and, for that matter, one of the most impressive structures of its kind anywhere in the world.  First and foremost, it belongs to Pennsylvania's people.  And that's why, I've devoted this special page on my Senate website to the Capitol's celebration.

A Rare Tour of the Capitol Dome.  Click HERE to join Senator O'Pake as he gets a close up view -- from more than 200 feet above ground -- of the 52 million-pound Capitol Dome.  The Senator was on hand July 25, 2006, as the public (for the first and only time in about 50 years) was permitted to go up in the dome for a bird's eye inspection.  The rare event was hosted by the Capitol Preservation Committee -- on which Senator O'Pake serves as a member -- for the purpose, in part, of introducing the committee's new, full-color 384-page, 400 photograph hardback book entitled:  "Literature in Stone:  The Hundred Year HIstory of Pennsylvania's State Capitol."
